Persona5: The Phantom X Review
Updated 2026-06-03
Persona5: The Phantom X is a free-to-play gacha RPG that somehow captures the soul of Persona 5 without feeling like a cheap cash grab. After 80 hours across two months, here is my honest review.
The Good — It Feels Like Persona
The art direction is flawless. The UI oozes that signature P5 style — sharp reds, black-and-white contrasts, and fluid animations. The soundtrack reuses classic Persona 5 tracks while adding new bangers. The story, while not as tight as P5 Royal, is genuinely engaging. You play as Wonder, a new Phantom Thief in Tokyo, and the cast of returning characters (Joker, Morgana, Ann, Ryuji) are as charming as ever.

The Bad — It Is Still a Gacha
Let us not pretend. The gacha system is designed to tempt you. Pull rates for 5-star characters are around 0.6% base, and the pity system at 90 pulls is standard but punishing if you lose the 50/50. The endgame also gets grindy — daily quests, weekly bosses, and material farming become a second job if you let them. And the story is not finished yet; new chapters roll out with each major patch, so you will hit a "To be continued" wall eventually.
FAQ
- Is Persona5: The Phantom X better than Persona 5 Royal?
- No. P5R is a complete, premium experience. Phantom X is a worthy spin-off with its own identity, but it does not replace the original.
- Is the game pay-to-win?
- Not aggressively. Free players can clear all content, but PVP modes favor spenders.
- Would you recommend it?
- If you are a Persona fan, yes — it is free, it is fun, and it is more Persona. If you hate gacha, skip it.
